Basic Principles of Deck Construction

A deck is simply a platform composed of frame and wood surface designed to accept certain loads that's typically raised above the ground. With an attached deck, one end of the frame is supported by a ledger board fastened to the house. The other end rests on a beam that is supported by a combination of wood and concrete posts. Accessories include rails for safety, benches for functional use or decorative elements, and steps for moving onto and off of the deck or to change elevations within the deck area.
